Hard Drive Shredding: The Best Method for Secure Data Destruction

The shredding of a hard drive is universally recognized as the best method of destroying recorded data. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-88 “Guidelines for Media Sanitization” identifies the shredding of a hard drive as the best method to assure absolute destruction of recorded data. We strictly follow NIST guidelines.

Destroying data on to be disposed of media is a core requirement of GLB, FACTA, HIPAA and other Federal and State data privacy regulations.

Plant based shredding of electronic media is by far the least cost method of data sanitization.  However, some organizations, for data security reasons, will not allow media containing “live data” to be transported outside of the organizations physical security perimeter.  In this case we provide both on-site shredding or NIST approved degaussing services.  After on-site degaussing the media is securely transported back to our NAID AAA certified secure destruction facility for shredding.  On-site degaussing plus plant based shredding is a less expensive sanitzation alternative to on-site shredding for smaller quantities of media and in some states such as NJ on-site shredding may be prohibited by environmental regulations.

Hard drive shredding services may be available from many vendors, but only at Back Thru The Future do we incorporate it into our exclusive Safe Harbor Express data destruction program. Only through a rigorous process like Safe Harbor Express can you be assured that you meet all legal, regulatory and environmental requirements, and that all of the stakeholders’ needs will be fulfilled: legal, records management, IT and environmental.
